Retail trade managers operate organizations specializing in retail sale. Their tasks may include overseeing staff, studying market research and creating marketing plans.
Retail trade managers have strong leadership and communication skills. They also have good business management and entrepreneurial skills.

Retail trade managers determine and select merchandise to be sold in their organizations, plan marketing strategies and study market research to determine important information such as current market trends. They also carry out an organization's banking, determine staffing requirements and manage staff: retail trade managers hire, fire, supervise and oversee staff.
Retail trade managers work in a wide spectrum of organizations, ranging from department stores and supermarkets to travel agencies and car dealerships. They may also run their own business.

The employment prospects for retail managers are good. Increased consumer spending (due in part to government tax cuts) is causing an increase in demand in the area of retail sales.
The unemployment rate in this sector is significantly below average and the retirement rate is above average. As a result of these three factors, the number of available jobs is -- and should continue to be -- greater than the number of job seekers.

Retail trade managers need a high school diploma. In certain cases, they may also be required to hold a college diploma or university degree in business administration or in a field related to the product or service that they are selling.
Retail trade managers generally need several years experience in their chosen field, including experience as a supervisor.
Training in this field may be obtained in the Townships in English at the ETSB Vocational Training Centre in the form of a 900-hour Professional Sales Vocational Education program. Also in the townships, the Centre de Formation Professionnelle 24 Juin offers a French-language DEP in "Vente Conseil" with a COOP. Lastly, the Cégep de Sherbrooke offers a French-language DEC in "Gestion de Commerces" with an optional "DEC-BACC" plan. This plan allows students with the DEC to obtain a BA for only two additional years of study. As well, a work term is available for this DEC.
Outside of the Townships, LaSalle College in Montreal offers and ACS in Retail Fashion Visual Presentation. As well, Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto offers a Diploma in Retail Management.
