The Position

The Major Gifts and Planned Giving Officer will implement a major gifts fund raising plan which will include identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts ($100,000+) of high- capacity prospects, and planned gift prospects. The successful candidate will represent the philanthropic interests of the School to achieve fund raising objectives, and is expected to travel, work with colleagues, parents, alumnae, volunteers and the Bishop’s College School community.

Key Responsibilities

Solicit major gifts of $10,000 - $50,000 from alumnae and non-alumnae; activate a planned giving program.

Major Gifts

  • Provide strategic input into the development, establishment and implementation of the overall Strategic Plan to achieve fundraising goals
  • Develop and implement a major gift cultivation and solicitation strategy
  • Participate in all stages of the gift cycle, including proposals and gift agreements
  • Coordinate communication and events for donors and prospects to move potential donors in

    an appropriate and timely fashion toward successful solicitation, confirmation and

    recognition of major gifts

  • Identify and build relationships with major gift prospects
  • Monitor prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations
  • Update and maintain accurate records
  • Facilitate volunteer development (inclusive of faculty, staff, alumni and BCS

    community) to support fund development initiatives within Major Gifts and Philanthropic activities for Shaping the Future


  • Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors
  • Work collaboratively with the Head of School, Director of Advancement, volunteers and Advancement personnel who are participating in the management of prospects
  • Prepare written materials, including correspondence, solicitation materials, acknowledgements, and regular communications as part of the stewardship program
  • Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed and have opportunities to increase their level of support annually
  • Promote a collegial atmosphere within the development department, working cooperatively with all fundraising officers to help them and the department attain their overall financial and advancement goals

    Planned Giving

  • Identify and cultivate planned giving prospects
  • Draft gift agreements for review by prospects and their advisors
  • Organize and help conduct presentations for prospective donors, professional financial and

    estate planners, and other constituencies

  • Develop procedures for tracking and qualifying prospects
  • Develop procedures for recording and reporting planned gifts as well as doing statistical

    analysis of these records

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with planned giving advisors

    Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Masters preferred
  • Extensive familiarity in major or planned gift fundraising preferably in education
  • Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the college’s fundraising

    priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders,

    trustees, volunteers, and the advancement office team

  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse


  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to

    develop relationships between them and the School

  • Exemplary communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
  • Willingness to travel
  • In depth knowledge of or experience with BCS is a definite asset
